More Peeks at the Design Wall

I know that many of you are anxious to see the final quilt top for Terry, so I decided to show you a couple of sneek peaks of the design wall. Just when I think I'm going to sit and sew, something or someone interrupts me. I didn't make my goal - not even close to finishing by today :( I'll be out of town for the next few days and then there is Thanksgiving. Maybe after everyone is stuffed and lazy after Thanksgiving dinner I'll be able to get away! Wish me luck!!

I also wanted to show you my cute birthday presents - aren't they adorable?!!

One down, Two to go!

I did it! I finished one of Terry's quilt tops!! I started with the lap quilt top - I thought it would be easier to do the smaller one first to get me in the mood - and it worked. Did I share with you the amazing thing about the blocks? I'm not sure if I did, so I'll tell you again just in case. OK - when the blocks were coming in the mail, I noticed that there were a lot of star blocks. So, I thought it would be neat to arrange the top with a pattern of stars somehow. But, as the blocks started pouring in, I realized that I might be able to do a whole lap quilt with just stars - especially those Ohio stars as Terry is from Ohio. As I ironed the blocks, I set aside all the star blocks. I also set aside the embroidered blocks - those that had sayings or embroidered pictures. When I squared up all the blocks, unfortunately there were some that were too small - so I set those aside also. OK - here is the amazing part! Remember I wanted the original quilt to be 81" x 81"? That would mean I would need 81 blocks for that quilt top. Well, guess how many blocks I ended up with after I set the others aside????? YUP - 81!! Now how cool was that?!! I was able to combine the star blocks and the embroidered blocks into this first lap quilt. I can't show you a picture - sorry :( It would ruin the surprise for Terry. I am going to work on the big quilt next - I'll be arranging blocks on my new design wall. Kim from Stillmeadow Quilting gave me the idea of using a flannel backed table cloth as a design wall. It worked perfectly!! I just tacked the table cloth on one of my dining room walls and voila - there my design wall was. It is SO much better than arranging the blocks on the floor! Plus, I was able to take pictures and look at the arrangement that way also. Thanks Kim :)

I always learn something new from each quilt project that I undertake. I am not done learning on this project, but I wanted to share with you my three new friends that I am not going to do without for any future projects. Here they are:Mary Ellen's Best Press (which you can purchase here at I Have A Notion!) is the best pressing spray I have ever used. It comes in an a number of scents as well as unscented. I chose the Caribbean Beach scent - very nice. Then there is my cheapo WalMart magnifying glasses, which makes the seams come alive. Last is a 1/4" foot attachment. You may not be able to see it, but there is a black metal piece at the edge of the foot that the fabric lays against as you sew. Wonderful!! There is a huge difference between a scant 1/4" and a 1/4" as I found out with my star block!

Well, there you have it - one down, two to go. The last quilt top will probably be lap size as well - I may try something I haven't done before. I may put the smaller size blocks on point with a neutral color. We'll see!

Working....

I just wanted to say hello - not much to post about today. I didn't get a thing done on Terry's quilt over the weekend! I worked a little on it yesterday - today I am devoting my time to laundry AND ironing and squaring up all the blocks. I purchased a 9 1/2" Omnigrid square to help me with cutting the blocks that needed to be trimmed. I am setting aside some of the blocks that are smaller than 9 1/2". I actually have enough blocks for the large quilt, a lap quilt and maybe another lap quilt. I may be able to make a sashed lap quilt with the smaller blocks. We will see once I get all of them squared up. I am hoping to be done with this process by tomorrow. The housework will just have to wait!! Blog surfing will have to wait until tonight :)

Forgot to mention this......

Two of my "super" cuties from a few years ago

I forgot to mention in my post yesterday a thank you to all of you who have contributed money to help with batting and postage costs. THANK YOU! I have $134.00 to cover my costs thanks to all you generous quilters. I will use the money for batting and postage for the quilts to the longarmers and then to Terry. Anything left over will be sent to Terry in her goodie box! I truly appreciate these donations - it helps make this project a true labor of love - all the way around.

I received a lovely block today from TB in Wallingford, CT. Check out the new additions here on flickr.

Thanks to all of you who have posted about Sweet Home Quilt Co and Melisa's giveaway! I'm hoping it will bring her some new followers and new customers. She was such a sweetie to giveaway a fat quarter bundle to me last year - I wanted to help pay her back somehow :)

Also, thank you all for your lovely comments yesterday. It brightened my day and gave me new courage to face the coming months. I so appreciate all the friends I have made through the internet. Before I went to bed last night, I wrote a few emails to some new friends. My husband came in and asked me what I was doing. He loves that I can connect to new friends this way - in the comfort of our home - when it is easy for me to sit and relax. Do you feel this way? Don't you like being able to "talk" with friends from all over the world about life and quilting and chocolate?? I know I do!! Take care today and thanks for visiting!

Sweet Home Quilt Co

I wanted to share with you a wonderful little quilt shop I learned about last year. It is in Conyers, Georgia - I know - quite a distance from Maine! But Melisa has an online store and an interesting blog that I'm hoping you will visit. Melisa has begun a fun Friday giveaway program - this week she is giving away two Moda Shangri-La charm packs and some Moda Glace yardage. You can visit her blog post about it here. Be sure to check back on her blog on Friday for the winner and also for her new giveaway. You'll be so happy to meet this lovely lady!

Blocks, Winners and Friends

WOW! I've been missing in action for a few days - busy with Halloween costumes and parties and life in general. It always amazes me how fast the days fly by. I'll be sitting on the couch at the end of the day, thinking about what I've done and sometimes it seems as if I've done not much of anything the whole day. But.......the laundry is done, the house is clean, the family is fed, Rocky is happy and I'm tired! So, I suppose I really do stay busy during the day. I think I miss the time I get to work on my projects that makes me feel like I haven't accomplished much. Do any of you feel this way?

OK - back to business :) Here are the last of the blocks that I've received (as of yesterday's mail)

Congratulations Ladies :)

The count on the blocks is now at 134! Yes, you read that right - 134 blocks! This is what 134 blocks look like:I'm making a CD with pictures of each block with their creator's name, blog names, and locations to send to Terry along with the quilts. If my life allows it, I'll get the blocks ironed and measured this week. I'm hoping to start sewing next week and be done with the tops by next weekend. I thought if I put it in writing - I would be bound to it! I wanted to let you know that Melissa from Mel's Own Place is creating the backings for the quilts. In the middle of a huge move no less! Also contributing is Kim of Create And Sew. Kim is creating custom labels for both quilts. And finally Mary of Quilt Hollow and Jackie of Canton Valley Quilt Works are doing the quilting for us. When you have a chance, stop by and visit these ladies to say hello and thank you!

I have to tell you what a joy this project has been so far. I feel like I know all of you - opening your envelopes, reading your notes and handling your blocks has given me a personal relationship with you. I have met some wonderful new friends from this project. I think some of you know already I suffer from major depression - especially as the seasons change to winter. On days that I have felt low, I have received emails that have lifted me up - notes that have reminded me that another day will come and that I am special too. Thank you for that! I think as I sew these quilt tops, I will create some special memories. So, this is not just a project for Terry, but a blessing for me. God really does watch over us, doesn't He?

I have a question for you - what size is too big? I was thinking I wanted to put together a good size quilt that Terry and John could snuggle up in together, but I don't want it to be too huge! My goal of 81 squares is going to be met - that would have made the quilt approximately 81"x81". Where do you think we should draw the line and make two quilts instead of one?
